Project case study

The Hyakumeizan Challenge

Promoting awareness and fund-raising for landmine clearance

Summary

Promotion, maintenance and a bilingual website for an international expedition

Objective

In 2001 three young men undertook a 10 month 4000 mile trek from the south to the north of Japan climbing the 100 Hyakumeizan mountains en route. This was to raise awareness and money forminefield clearance and survivor recovery for charities Adopt-A-Minefield UK (A United Nations project) and AAR Japan. The money raised helped fund a mobile clearance team in Afghanistan for 2 months.

Solution

The website acted as a reference for accompanying publicity, explained the aims of the efforts, followed and documented the ongoing trek and organised donations via a range of methods. A regular e-mail newsletter was produced and a team of 8 volunteers coordinated to translate the website to Japanese. Assistance with Media and Press was provided on the return of the team with interviews on local TV, radio and online being arranged. In Japan the website featured on national TV, radio and newspapers.

The website is now maintained as an archive and source of information for mountaineering, hiking or travelling in Japan. It is hoped that it will continue to inspire donations and raise awareness about the realities of landmines.
